SECOND ANNUAL MONTGOMERY COUNTY INTERFAITH 5K

The Second Annual Montgomery County Interfaith 5K Walk/Run and Kids Fun Run, hosted by Shaare Torah Jewish Community, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, and the Islamic Society of the Washington Area, will be held this Labor Day.  Last year this event brought together over 300 Montgomery County residents to share a fun and health-promoting activity and raised more than $3,375 for Gaithersburg HELP.  Adults and children of all backgrounds, faith, and athletic abilities are welcome to participate.  Our goal is to bring together the myriad communities in the county enabling people from diverse backgrounds to nurture understanding, tolerance and friendships while supporting a very worthy cause.

The Montgomery County Interfaith 5K starts at 8:00 am on September 4, 2017 at Maryland Soccerplex, located at 18031 Central Park Circle, Boyds, MD 20841.  Runners and walkers start together. Stroller runners will be allowed at the back of the pack.  The course is a loop, so fans and family can see the start and finish at the same location.  Although the top male and female finishers in each age group will receive prizes, all who participate and share in this community-building event will be winners!

Registration is open online at mocointerfaith5k.org.  Registration is $30 through August 13th; after that, it goes up to $35 until race day when it is $40.

The Tot Trot for children 2 to 5 years old happens at 9:00 am followed by the Kid’s Fun Run for 6 to 12 year-olds at 9:10 am.  Registration for either event is $10 in advance and $12 the day of the race.

Proceeds from the race will be donated to Gaithersburg HELP and C-4.  Gaithersburg HELP was formed by local churches and synagogues to meet the immediate needs of families in the Greater Gaithersburg area affected by financial challenges.  Today, the network is comprised of more than 25 member congregations and 160 volunteers.  Gaithersburg HELP also receives critical support from local businesses and civic organizations.

C-4, also an interfaith group, was founded in 1986 to serve the needs of the Colesville community.  Currently C-4 has 19 member organizations representing many different religious faiths, including Christian, Jewish, and Muslim congregations. C-4 offers the Clothes Closet, the Baby Closet, the Holiday Toy Closet, and the School Supply Program. Any Montgomery County resident who can provide proof of need is eligible to shop at C-4 FREE OF CHARGE.  Volunteers and donations are always needed and appreciated.

There are various opportunities to support the Interfaith 5K through sponsorships and in-kind donations, such as food at the finish or water for the course water stations.  Congregations can also participate as supporters of participants. Contact Interfaith5K@gmail.com for more information.

The Interfaith 5K represents not only a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors, but also to support your neighbors in need through Gaithersburg Help and C-4.    Help us to demonstrate what our diverse community can do when we work together!
